A YNAB alternative when the goal is paying off debt
YNAB is, above all, a budgeting system: its method asks you to give every dollar a job.[1] It also has a loan planner that shows how much interest and time an extra payment saves.[2] If you want to plan all of your spending, that is a strength, and a debt-only tool will not replace it.
If what you actually want is a payoff plan — every debt in a single order, with an estimated date you can watch move — a smaller tool may fit better. We make Dang! Payoff, a debt-only planner, so read this with that in mind; every statement about YNAB is footnoted to YNAB's own website.
What YNAB is built to do
Every time money arrives, the YNAB Method asks what it is for, and you plan your spending around the answer.[3] YNAB can link your bank accounts and import transactions automatically, or you can enter transactions by hand.[2][4] It runs on the web, iPhone, Android, iPad and Apple Watch.[5]
For debt, its loan planner calculates how much interest and time you would save by putting extra money toward a loan.[2] Its US pricing page lists $14.99 a month or $109 a year in US dollars, plus tax where applicable; prices elsewhere may differ.[1]
What a debt-only planner does differently
A debt payoff planner starts from what you owe rather than what you earn. You enter each debt with its balance, rate and minimum, choose an order to pay them in, and get a single estimated debt-free date for all of them together, with a month-by-month schedule behind it. It does not ask where the rest of your money goes.
That is less than a budget, on purpose. It suits someone who already knows what they can put toward debt each month and wants to see where that leads — or someone for whom a full budget has not stuck.
Do you need both?
Possibly. If you already budget in YNAB and it is working, the budget tells you how much you can put toward debt and a payoff planner tells you what that amount achieves across every debt. Undebt.it, a different debt planner, offers a YNAB link on its paid tier and notes that plenty of people run a budgeting tool alongside it.[6] If you are choosing a single tool, choose by the question you ask most: where is my money going, or when will this be paid off.
Where YNAB is stronger
- It is a complete budgeting system, not only a debt tool.[3]
- It can import transactions from linked bank accounts.[2]
- It has apps for iPhone, Android, iPad and Apple Watch as well as the web.[5]
